THE LEAGUE: SEASON FOUR, WEEK NINE

The Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines is packed to capacity, with nearly 17,000 fans filling the arena to see their hometown hero and former League champion, Johnny Triumph. Naturally, there are some supporters of the other League members in the audience, as the camera pans the crowd before stopping at ringside and our usual announce crew.

Bob Sinclair: Good evening, everyone, and happy Labor Day! Bob Sinclair here with Frankie Garnett and Tori Montgomery, and tonight the playoff push continues as we start to narrow the field!

Tori Montgomery: Tonight, while we might not eliminate anyone completely from playoff contention, the chances of a few are certainly going to be crippled by the time tonight’s action is over.

Frankie Garnett: You can worry about that. I’m more worried about that section over there, guys.

Obediently, the camera pans over to a section of the crowd at one corner of the ringside area, decked out completely in Scott Stevens’ League and LPW gear.

Tori Montgomery: Great, this is Houston all over again!

Bob Sinclair: What do you mean, Tori?

Tori Montgomery: The two farthest on the left, Lantz Sheridan and Kyle Driver, are a tag team that has close ties to Scott Stevens. The one on the far right is Douglas Ross, a former medical doctor who was trained by Stevens to be a wrestler. The others are likely other friends and allies of Stevens. Given what happened the last time a group of people closely associated with Stevens made an appearance at a League event, I’m beginning to fear for the safety of our wrestlers tonight.

Bob Sinclair: If it’s any consolation, their most likely target is up first, so we’ll find out whether we have to be on edge all night. Amelia, take it away!

RED DIVISION: The Phoenix (6-2, 10%) vs. Pizza Mask III (3-5, 15%)

The theme to Samurai Pizza Cats, of all things, hits as Pizza Mask comes out on a scooter, with a pizza box strapped to the back, wearing a helmet with his pizza-design mask, his black polo shirt covered by a red t-shirt that simply says “You Can’t Avoid the Noidsault!”, and khaki pants, hopping off the scooter and unstrapping the pizza box, holding it up to the screen to show that it reads “Pain Pizza! Now With 100% Real Cheese!” before he heads to the ring. As he enters the ring itself, he pulls off the Noidsault T-shirt and tosses it into the crowd, getting ready for the match.

Amelia Williams: Ladies and gentlemen, our opening contest this evening is scheduled for one fall in the Red Division! Introducing first, from Your Friendly Neighborhood Pizzeria, weighing 199 pounds...Pizza Mask III!

Bob Sinclair: Pizza Mask has strugged in recent weeks, and his task does not get easier this week against a League original.

Frankie Garnett: Except that the rookie could take advantage of the distraction at ringside, if he were smart.

Tori Montgomery: He wouldn’t do that. It’s not his style.

Bon Jovi’s “Blaze of Glory” hits the arena speakers as one of the original members of The League comes out, his wife in tow. He has a deadly serious look on his face as he shadowboxes on his way to the ring. As they reach ringside, she reaches up to give him a kiss on the cheek and gives him a slight shove towards the squared circle. He dives in under the bottom rope, coming to his feet with a war cry towards the heavens as he shifts his focus to the ring.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, being accompanied to the ring by Te’Snilo Bradenbury, from the End of Nowhere, weighing 337 pounds...this is The Phoenix!

Bob Sinclair: Guys, I think Phoenix looks ready. He’s not even letting the people at ringside register in his mind.

Frankie Garnett: Because they don’t have food, more than likely.

Tori Montgomery: No, I think it’s simply the fact that he’s got a fighting chance to take over the division lead tonight, and he’s not going to let anyone stop him.

Bob Sinclair: Phoenix walks away with the victory tonight, and now the pressure is on Maxx Skabb to win in order to maintain the Red Division lead.

Tori Montgomery: Apparently, Stevens’ crew isn’t here for Phoenix—they aren’t moving even as Phoenix heads back up the ramp towards the locker rooms.

Frankie Garnett: I was afraid of that.

Bob Sinclair: What do you mean?

Frankie Garnett: They’re here for Thor. Scorpion didn’t take kindly to Thor’s words a couple of weeks ago, and now it’s payback time. This is not good….

BLUE DIVISION: Ian Carlisle (1-7, 12%) vs. Ezekial Kerghan (6-2, 14%)

”Not a Stranger to the Danger” blares through the arena as one of last season’s rookies steps into the arena, a look of determination on his face. A moment later, he sprints towards the ring, sliding in under the bottom rope and heading to a corner to appeal to the fans.

Amelia Williams: Our next contest is scheduled for one fall in the Blue Division! Introducing first, from Blackpool, England, weighing 222 pounds...Ian Carlisle!

Bob Sinclair: Carlisle’s season is all but over at this juncture, as it would take wins in all six remaining weeks, plus help, for Carlisle to make the playoffs as a wild card.

Frankie Garnett: In other words, he’s going to challenge tying Demonio for worst regular-season record in League history.

Tori Montgomery: Not an honor anyone would be aiming for, Frankie….

Escape the Fate’s “This War is Ours” hits the arena speakers as The League’s newest resident psychopath emerges and heads towards the ring, looking like he’s having an argument with voices only he can hear.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, from The Dog Pound, weighing 251 pounds...Ezekial Kerghan!

Bob Sinclair: Kerghan has been a major turn-around story this season, riding high in the Blue Division from the outset and showing that he’s a serious threat.

Frankie Garnett: The only question that remains right now is whether he will have trouble come the playoffs. I find it highly unlikely that he will not make it with the run he is on.

Tori Montgomery: For once, you and I agree on something, Frankie.

Tori Montgomery: Given his match tonight, he might have to be one of the favorites come the playoffs in Beijing this season!

Diamond (3-5, 22%) vs. Tarik Nolan (4-4, 5%)

”Regulate” hits the speakers, immediately drawing the ire of the crowd as a large figure stands in the entryway, backlit by a clear spotlight. Pyro explodes on the stage, causing the light to shut off as the figure finally emerges onto the stage proper. Laughing at the boos hurled in his direction, he takes his time walking to the ring and subsequently entering it for his next match.

Amelia Williams: This bout is scheduled for one fall! Introducing first, from Shreveport, Louisiana, weighing 292 pounds...Tarik Nolan!

Bob Sinclair: Nolan has struggled a bit this season; tonight’s chances don’t look so good given the hole he finds himself in.

Frankie Garnett: Hole? More like a chasm, Bob. I don’t we’ve ever seen an upset of this magnitude happen, and for good reason!

Tori Montgomery: Nonetheless, any time Nolan steps between the ropes, he has a chance. He’s that freakishly strong.

”Don’t Cha” hits the arena to a mixed reaction as The League’s lone female member emerges from backstage. There is a confident smirk on her face as she talks trash with some of the louder fans before sprinting into the ring by diving under the bottom rope. As she stands, she proceeds to the corner nearest the announce table, hands thrown in the air as the soaks in the crowd reaction while her manager stands outside, also applauding her client.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, accompanied to the ring by Jayde, from Aberdeen, Scotland, weighing 137 pounds...Diamond!

Bob Sinclair: If Diamond wants to keep any hope of a playoff spot alive, she needs this match.

Frankie Garnett: Thank you, Miss Obvious.

Dante Lorenzo (5-3, 15%) vs. Rannulf von Krüshengberg (3-5, 14%)

The opening to Rammstein’s “Mein Teil” hits the speakers as the largest member of The League emerges, causing everyone with something that could even remotely be considered food to get away from the entranceway as quickly as possible for fear of losing their food...and at least a body part or two.

Amelia Williams: This match is scheduled for one fall! Introducing first, from der Schwarzwald, Deutschland, weighing 421 pounds...”Der Panzer” Rannulf von Krüshengberg!

Bob Sinclair: This match should be interesting, as two long-time associates face off.

Frankie Garnett: It would be if we didn’t have Team LARIATO imploding every season.

Tori Montgomery: ….

Three Days Grace’s “Riot” hits the speakers to a chorus of jeers as the first Italian-born member of The League emerges from the back, ignoring the crowd in the arena as he mentally prepares for his upcoming match. Reaching the ring, he climbs up the steps and enters between the ropes, his face never losing a look of confident indifference.

Amelia Williams: (opening), from Florence, Italy, weighing 291 pounds...Dante Lorenzo!

Bob Sinclair: Lorenzo has had more success this season than his larger counterpart, but tonight could be the night that really sets him apart from Rannulf.

The fans applaud after seeing a very good match.

Amelia Williams: Here is your winner, at a time of fifty-nine minutes and fifty seconds… Rannulf von Krüshengberg!

Bob Sinclair: And finally, mercifully, this bloodbath is over!

Tori Montgomery: Medical staff is swarming the ring, tending to these two warriors who frankly shouldn’t have had to go as long as they did.

Frankie Garnett: The fans seemed to like it, so what else do you need?

Bob Sinclair: Folks, we’re going to cut to commercial here; as we replace the ring canvas and make sure than Dante and Rannulf are all right after that bloodbath of a match they had.

YELLOW DIVISION: Robbie Maynard (6-2, 14%) vs. Benjamin T. Stanton, Jr. (3-5, 15%)

The opening riffs of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” hits the speakers, drawing a mixed reaction from the crowd as one of the League’s initial playoff wrestlers emerges from the stage, bathed in a blue light shining beneath him. After pausing to mentally prepare himself, he walks to the ring, his eyes never leaving the squared circle as he climbs onto the apron and ducks between the ropes.

Amelia Williams: This is a Yellow Division contest scheduled for one fall! Introducing first, from Liverpool, England, weighing 251 pounds...Robbie Maynard!

Bob Sinclair: Folks, we’re back after the clean-up from our last match…have either of you ever seen a bloodbath that severe in your years of covering wrestling?

Tori Montgomery: I can certainly say that I haven’t. That was one of the most vile matches I can recall seeing.

Frankie Garnett: Same here. Words cannot describe it.

”Here Comes the Money” hits the speakers, as one of this season’s rookies emerges from the back, with a beautiful woman hanging off his left arm. He pays no attention to the jeering fans, his attitude simply screaming “I’m better than you.”

Amelia Williams: His opponent, accompanied to the ring by Missy Callistra, from Providence, Rhode Island, weighing 224 pounds...Benjamin T. Stanton, Jr.!

Bob Sinclair: Trying to get back into a sense of normality here, this match could be a big one for Maynard. A win here and he puts himself in firm command of his division so far out from the playoffs.

Tori Montgomery: Stanton needs this win; his season is basically riding on it here.

Frankie Garnett: Against Maynard? Look, I might not think highly of the schmuck but he’s 6-2 for a reason. Stanton has no chance.

Amelia Williams: Here is your winner, at a time of five minutes and ten seconds…Robbie Maynard!

Frankie Garnett: Heh. Told ya so.

Bob Sinclair: Maynard wasting no time tonight in putting the rookie away, and setting a stranglehold on the division.

Tori Montgomery: Maynard leads his division by three matches with five to go. It would take a massive meltdown for him to lose the division now.

GREEN DIVISION CAGE MATCH: Sean (6-2, 20%) vs. Master Imoka (5-3, 11%)

Slayer’s “Angel of Death” blasts from the arena speakers as one of this season’s rookies emerges from the back, staring a hole through the ring as if by doing so, he can change it to his preferred medium of a martial arts mat. As he gets to ringside, he quickly lashes out and kicks the top half of the steel steps off the bottom half, snarling as he slides into the ring and stands motionless, waiting for the bell to sound.

Amelia Williams: The following contest is a steel cage match in the Green Division! The only way to win is to escape the cage, with both feet touching the floor! Introducing first, from the Isle of Samoa, weighing 214 pounds...Master Imoka!

Frankie Garnett: I would think Imoka would be out of his element here. It’s not in his nature to escape from a fight until his opponent is within a hair of his life.

Bob Sinclair: Which is a good point. This will be Imoka’s first cage match in his short League tenure; we’ll see how well he takes to it.

Motley Crue’s “Kickstart My Heart” hits the arena speakers as a spotlight shines down on the top of the ramp. Emerging from the back, the reigning League Champion emerges, gold belt gleaming in the spotlight as he throws a hand into the air, causing pyro to erupt from behind him in a manner of paparazzi photographing him. With a smirk, the champ slings the title belt over his shoulder and heads to the ring, the spotlight remaining on him the whole time.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, now residing in Los Angeles, California, weighing 230 pounds, he is the reigning and defending League Champion...”Hollywood” Sean!

Tori Montgomery: This will be Sean’s fourth cage match in The League; he’s 2-1 in these matches entering tonight.

Frankie Garnett: So you’re saying this could be a squash.

Tori Montgomery: …I didn’t think I’d actually be right about that!

Frankie Garnett: See, Tori? Even you can be right. And on that, I need to get Thor ready to go.

Bob Sinclair: As Frankie heads to the back, we’re moving on to our next match of the evening. Amelia?

GREEN DIVISION: Jack Lightning (3-5, 15%) vs. Nuclear Templeton (5-3, 19%)

Linkin Park’s “New Divide” hits the speakers as the first Canadian to enter The League emerges from the back, looking surprisingly at ease as he steps onto the ring apron and leaps over the top rope. Climbing onto the turnbuckles, he raises an arm in the air and drinks in the cheers of the crowd before dropping back to the mat and preparing for his match.

Amelia Williams: The following contest is scheduled for one fall in the Green Division! Introducing first, from London, Ontario, weighing 233 pounds...Jack Lightning!

Bob Sinclair: A lot of people are writing Lightning off in this match, Tori.

Tori Montgomery: Both he and SGRaaize, who we’ll see later tonight, came in tonight at 13-1 underdogs in Vegas. That shows you just how much faith the public has in Templeton in this match.

Billy Idol’s “Shock to the System” hits the speakers, bringing the crowd to their feet in ovation as one of the League’s more recognizable faces emerges from backstage and across the green-tinted stage. As he hits the end of the entrance ramp, he throws his arms into the air, sending a pair of mushroom clouds into the air from the stage as he makes his way to the ring and through the ropes.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, from Atlantic City, New Jersey, weighing 278 pounds...Nuclear Templeton!

Bob Sinclair: Lightning fought his way out of the torture rack submission, only to eat a lariat for his troubles. What a way to lose a match!

Scott Stevens (2-6, 17%) vs. Thor Hammerskald (4-4, 21%)

Amon Amarth’s “Death in Fire” hits the speakers, to a decent ovation he emerges from backstage, looking every bit the part of a Viking warrior as he strides to the ring with a determined look on his face...and scattering some of the fans away from the entrance ramp as he turns to glare at them. Behind him, his manager/League color commentator can be see giving him encouragement as the Viking enters the confines of the squared circle.

Amelia Williams: This contest is scheduled for one fall! Introducing first, being accompanied to the ring by Frankie Garnett, from Oslo, Norway, weighing 310 pounds...Thor Hammerskald!

Tori Montgomery: I expect tensions to run high in this one, Bob.

Bob Sinclair: No kidding. Maybe now we’ll see why Frankie has seemed off lately.

The lights in the arena go pitch black, as red lasers and spotlights light up the area. The video screen lights up and flashes across the screen, “Nothing survives my sting!” The crowd starts booing as “End of Days” by Emphatic hits the speakers, and the man in question appears from the back and stops on the stage. As “The Venomous One” stares down his opponent with an icy glare he points to them, then he makes the throat slash gesture to them before he begins walking to the ring, being pelted by trash the whole way.

Amelia Williams: (opening), from Houston, Texas, weighing 265 pounds... “The Scorpion” Scott Stevens!

Bob Sinclair: Stevens has stopped at ringside, talking with his associates at the corner of the entranceway. This is not boding well for Thor Hammerskald, Tori.

Thor can be seen gesturing for Amelia to hand him the microphone.

Tori Montgomery: What in the heck…?

Stevens enters the ring, and turns to face Hammerskald as the Viking raises the mic to his mouth.

Thor Hammerskald: Stevens, I told you that if you tried another stunt like Houston again that I would be ready. Your so-called “friends” will not be a factor in this match. Come on down, boys!

There is a bit of a pause before a bit of commotion can be seen throughout the arena. It takes a moment for the cameras to see everything that’s going on, and another moment for recognition to hit our announcers at ringside.

Bob Sinclair: That’s…that’s Harley Neill, Tori! The top champion in Men of Steel Combat over in the UK! And over there…Carl Edwards and Jeffery McPeterson, the MOSC tag champions! That’s Ultra Violence coming down right next to us!

Tori Montgomery: It…it looks like the entire MOSC roster has left Scotland to come to Des Moines, Bob! But how did Thor manage this?!

To say that Stevens is livid is an understatement.as he snarls at Thor, who lets out a roar to the heavens that is echoed by not only the crowd, but the entire MOSC roster as the bell sounds to start the match!

At the entryway, Stevens’ associates jump the railing, charging towards the ring. At the same time, the MOSC roster jumps into the ring, and a pier-six brawl breaks out, with steel chairs, lead pipes, brass knuckles, and kendo sticks a-plenty. The action is furious, and the show fades to commercial as practically the entire Des Moines Police Department storms out to the ringside area to get this situation settled.

BLACK DIVISION: SGRaaize (2-6, 15%) vs. Johnny Triumph (5-3, 29%)

A Portugesa hits the speakers to a rousing chorus of jeers as the Tron displays the national flag of Portugal. Bob Sinclair: This has been a show that we’ll remember for a while, Tori, and things have finally calmed down after that fracas broke out.

Tori Montgomery: I got word that Frankie has decided to remain backstage the rest of the night, out of fear of his safety. Can’t say that I blame him after what just happened….

A remixed version of “Ecstasy of Gold” hits the speakers, which is nearly drowned out in cheers as he emerges from the entryway. Instead of taking the steps closest to him, he walks around to the opposite side of the ring, drawing in more cheers as he finally climbs the steps and enters the ring.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, from Des Moines, Iowa, weighing 228 pounds...Johnny Triumph!

Bob Sinclair: This crowd is solidly behind their hometown hero tonight, Tori!

Maxx Skabb (6-2, 25%) vs. Eidenhoek Gaiaspade (2-6, 19%)

Disturbed’s “Indestructible” hits the arena as one of this season’s rookies emerges from the back, looking surprisingly at ease despite the hard beat of the song. Jumping onto the apron from the floor, he steps between the ropes and calmly waits waits for the bell to get the match underway.

Amelia Williams: This is our main event of the evening, scheduled for one fall! Introducing first, from the Island of Tria, weighing 205 pounds...Eidenhoek Gaiaspade!

A dim red light shines on the entryway, revealing a hulking figure making his way to ringside, with two more men hiding just at the fringes of the spotlight, their eyes never leaving the form of the big man. As the refrain hits, the spotlights immediately focus on him as white strobe lights flash on the entrance stage. He slides under the bottom rope, his orange jumpsuit a stark contrast to most of the clothing in the audience as the song fades into silence.

Amelia Williams: His opponent, from the Orange County Correctional Facility, weighing 289 pounds...Maxx Skabb!

Bob Sinclair: Skabb, with a win, maintains his lead in the Red Division.
